Greyhound Rescue of Idaho is an all volunteer 501c3 organization dedicated to the rescue of racing greyhounds and finding them loving forever homes! We have been serving Idaho and the surrounding area for over 18 years......
Are you interested in adopting a Greyhound?! Let us help you find out how!
Hello,
Thanks so much for your inquiry~
Are you near Boise/Nampa/Idaho Falls/ the Idaho or
Eastern Oregon area? If not we can direct you to
a closer adoption group to you!
We only adopt within 150 mile radius or so...
So anyway, on our website is an application for
adoption, you may print it out, fill it out and
send it in the mail to us.
Address is : Greyhound Rescue of Idaho
146 N. Middleton Road
PMB 125
Nampa, Idaho 83651
We will then schedule a time for us to get
together with you to answer questions and go
over all pertinent info for a new adopter.
(On occasion, if we have several adopters,
we hold an informative seminar together)
We also do home checks and fence checks before the
adoption and all people living in the home, must
be available to talk to.
We do have 2 adoption booths each month
where we show the dogs:
Nampa Petco, 1st Sat of each month, noon~2 in the afternoon
NorthWest Pets Store, 2nd Sat of each month, noon~2 in the afternoon
We adopt out solely on personality and what is
available to us. We should have greyhounds coming
to our area approx. every 2 months or so, SO if you are
seriously interested it is good to get an application to us
as quickly as possible!
The adoption fee is $250 plus $25 transportation fee.
We only adopt out greyhounds to those who have a fenced
yard and want to make the dog a permanent member of
their family and companion animal.
The greyhound will come with: spay or neuter, teeth cleaned, dewormed, all vaccines, chipped, tickborne blood tested & heart
worm tested. It will have a collar and dog tags that must stay on the dog as well. This will have your phone numbers and our phone numbers on it. You may change out the collar, but the tags must
stay on the dog always!
You will also need to buy a dog coat from us, $45
You will need to purchase high quality dog food,
give him or her lots of fresh water daily and keep your greyhound as an indoor housepet. You must sign a contract with us, and be willing to keep the greyhound on a no-slip collar and lead, OR a harness and lead for the life time of the greyhound, unless inside a
safely fenced area. This means that greyhounds can not
go on hikes, run thru the park or go for walks unleashed. EVER without a leash!
Nor do we ever allow them to ride in the back of open vehicles!
The martingale collars (no slips as we call them)
are available at some pet stores and online, (EBAY),
but we will loan you one, when you get your dog,
until you are able to buy your own. We also rent
out the large wire crates, $25 a month, first month
free.
You must have your new dog's feces checked within
a month of adoption to check for any remaining parasites
and keep the yard cleaned of feces regularly.
Greyhounds are fast, and can run up to 45 miles an hour in just 3
seconds. Gates must be locked! You must always watch them
close around open doors; house, car and garage.
Sliding glass doors must be marked with decals at the dogs eye
level for the life time of the dog. ( Another way of marking glass
doors, is border wallpaper!)
Stairs and mirrors, rivers, lakes, ponds, pools and the ocean are all
new to your greyhound. In some instances, other dogs are
foreign to them.
They get along well with children, but do need their space
and a large crate for the first few months or longer.
Crates are used to put the greyhound in ONLY while
you are away from home. We do not want the greyhound
in a crate both day and nite. If you work outside the home
you must be willing to come home and let your greyhound out
during the day at least every 3~4 hours.
We do not adopt greyhounds to people who have 'only' outside dogs or vicious dogs.
Many greyhounds are adopted to folks
with cats. Caution is to be used. We do not adopt
greyhounds to people who own small rodents or rabbits.
Small dogs are Ok. We do have a booklet for you when you
adopt your greyhound which will help you with all that we are
talking about in this email.
If you can not keep your greyhound for any reason thru
out its lifetime, you must promise to give it back to Greyhound
Rescue of Idaho. You will promise to let us know if you move or
if the greyhound dies. You must promise to take it to the vet
for wellness checks, shots, toenail clips
and serious health issues immediately, when and if the situation
should arise.
We hope this has answered some of your questions, certainly
there is much more we will talk about together should you
apply to adopt a greyhound! Please feel free to contact
us if you have other questions. Also our website has a wealth
of information: www.greyhoundrescueofidaho.org
You will find, we are a very supportive group and will help you
before, during and after you adopt your greyhound, 24/7.
Greyhound Rescue of Idaho is a 501c3 non profit all volunteer
organization serving the greyhounds and their people for over 19 years!
We are able to do so because of the generosity of people who love
the greyhounds and send us donations, membership fees, thru fundraisers and grants.
Thank you & Greytfully yours,
Virginia and Kenneth McKean
